Commentary The subject of an African-American is rare in Hopper's body of work. The stylized features of the gentleman are close to caricature, yet forcefully convey his distinct personality. Dressed in a natty suit with flaring lapels and wearing a thick-brimmed bowler hat worn at a slight angle, he is presented in the act of blowing out smoke from between his lips. His left hand emerges from beneath his suit coat and is holding a cigar, which is emitting rounded plumes of smoke. The boundary contour-outlines of the head, hand, and upper torso are emphasized and add a dash of unpretentious wit. RPM
