|
In his drawings of multiple images of objects, animals, and people, Hopper habitually tried out various ideas as a means of working out compositions and honing in on details. The individual forms appear to be random and unrelated to one another. By marshalling disparate elements on one sheet and collaging them together, Hopper creates compartmentalized psychological situations. The simple unedited fragments of this sheet include a miniature cannon with a long-tailed mouse underneath it, a feeding chicken, the head of an eagle, a fragment of unfolding fabric, and the rear view of a bust of a pipe-smoking man on a table top.
