Commentary Hopper had a life-long interest in sports activities and his brand of realism was often concerned with vigorous physical activity.
Hoppers drawings often investigate urban life with particular bits and fragments slipping in and out of focus. They reflect the fast-paced city setting, which engenders quick, fleeting glances that are momentarily recorded on the brain, and then forgotten like the establishing montage of a film noir masterpiece. In these sketches, he often turned out variations on the same theme, which he recorded so quickly that they evaded conscious thought and were closer to dreams. The double-paneled arched doorway or window, frequently found on the familiar New York brownstone, is shown here amidst variations on the rounded contours of men’s hats. RPM
