Hopper's method of developing a painting often involved a variety of "premieres pensees" (first ideas) which this and several other sheets in the exhibition are prime examples. Drawing is used in this instance as an editing device in the iconographic vocabulary of the traditional architectural cannon. In this sheet, most of his visual ideas relate to one another. The center image of an arched brick bridge is surrounded by a clutter of architectural details: a building with a tall smokestack and two windows, a circular tower form or industrial container, details of wooden braces, and various other rough markings.
